I happened to be watching a Rick Steves show on Denmark and in the show they were describing a way of living that they had. It was called hyggelig (hoo.gl.ee). This hyggelig meant you always have a drink, some food, and at the very least a candle between you and your company. It meant feeling cozy at the very base translation of the word but actually much more, it was your surroundings without anything that would make you feel ill at ease or emotionally overwhelmed. It was actually the pursuit of serenity, of comfy, of homey, of anything that brought that warm fuzzy to your soul.

My jaw dropped at this Danish discovery of self. That one single word summed up the pursuit of my entire life. Hyggelig!!! This blog is about just that, all the things that make me feel hyggelig. My only hope is that they inspire you to find your own hyggelig too. Imagine a world full of hyggelig, just imagine...

Little Nooks And Cranny's

Isn't this cool? This corner by the bathroom door is the only place this house has this.
I love how little things like that add such character to a place.

This old house has some interesting and odd nooks and cranny's. One of which is right by the door that goes to the bathroom from the kitchen. It's a small recessed area. So I put a bookshelf in there to hold our linens with a future plan of building in the shelves. The only issue is now that nook looks very messy. I can't stand clutter, it's so not hyggelig inducing.

My on the cheap idea was to hang an extra IKEA curtain that we had on  hand in front of it. I think it worked out very well. Maybe someday when we build out the shelves I'll get a bit fancier and put a more colorful curtain in there. For now this made a world of difference. Especially since I haven't even been able to get all Martha on my linens like I usually do since we moved. It's all just jammed in there willy nilly.

I didn't even have the energy to throw the curtain in the steamer. Later perhaps.

I haven't been up to much on the home front since I haven't been feeling well, but I'm glad I was at least able to cover up an eyesore of a nook.
